When we design a laptop case, as a company we have to ask ourselves what are our priorities for this case design and we then rank them in importance.
Those areas of priorities are:
Protection
Storage
Transportation
Facilitation
Unfortunately these can not be all #1. So when looking for a laptop bag take into consideration what your most important priorities are and choose a bag accordingly.
Typically any soft sided fabric or neoprene bag or case is only going to protect against cosmetic scratches & scuffs. This type of case is great if you have a ruggedized machine and are returning it after you are done leasing it.
If you are carrying a laptop in a backpack you will need to protect it against two things:
1. Other items in the backpack that could press against it and cause a cracked screen.
2. And you need to protect it against a floor drop. You should consider buying an additional protective sleeve that provides a firm barrier around the laptop and helps to cushion the machine and provide some absorb some level of shock absorption should the backpack be dropped to the floor.
As for top loading bags, make sure that it has a dedicated area for the laptop and that it is sufficiently padded on all sides and bottom.
The level of protection and ultimately the most expensive is an “Always-On” case. In this design the laptop and case actually becomes one contagious unit, providing a protective barrier all around the laptop. The laptop is installed inside the case and is used while it is in the case. The best versions of these cases are ones that, should the laptop be accidently knocked to the floor, the case stays on the laptop protecting it. Some cases are Always-On but just sit in the case and are not secured to it. In the event should the laptop fall to the floor, if the case does not stay on the machine the laptop will hit the floor unprotected. Always-On cases are typically used by schools that have 1:1 laptop programs. That way the laptop is always protected no matter what.
